Unique, delicious flavor
I just tried Grandma Lu's, and it's fantastic. It has a very unique flavor, and the spiciness factor is just right - not overpowering but definitely has a kick. While I had it on grilled chicken, I googled Grandma Lu's website after seeing the other reviews, and the recipes there are very enticing - I can definitely see how Grandma Lu's would be great on other meats, and also on vegetables. I highly recommend.

Awesome Spice!
I heard so much about this exotic, tasty spice and was so excited to finally get my hands on some. To start, I tried one of the yummy recipes (Stir Fry Chicken) on the Grandma Lu's website. Turns out the hype was all worth it - while it has traditional Asian flavor, the spice also offers a kick that is positively unique. I look forward to trying the other recipes on the GL site and to try my own because you can tell this spice will taste great on just about anything.

Amazingly versatile seasoning!
We love Grandma Lu's and use it on everything from baked potatoes to vegetables and of course all meats, especially fish and chicken. Very unique spice... I have given it as a gift to other spice lovers. Haven't tried it in bloody mary's yet, but definitely will soon!

A bit different, and wonderful
These peppercorns are a beautiful rosy color, which clues you in before you even get a chance to open the package that they're not the peppercorns you've known all your life. When you do pull open the bag and inhale their aroma, you'll find they combine the scent of pepper with a wonderful fruity, almost floral overtone. It's hard to describe, and even harder to imagine until you've experienced it. The lovely part is that the flavor profile doesn't diminish in use; when I ground and steeped these Sichuan peppercorns for a dark chocolate mousse (grind finely, and steep in the heavy cream for 30 minutes before straining the cream into the chocolate) their vibrant peppery fruit/floral scent was the top note of the mousse. It was a memorably different flavor. Now I'm looking for ways to add them to more dishes, to see what new nuances they can impart to old favorites.

ZING! This is the real thing!
At last, a source for sparkling fresh, aromatic Sichuan pepper! This puts to shame all the withered flavorless pellets they sell by that name in spice shops and Chinatowns all over the country. Open the bag and a cold breeze flies over you; bite into a peppercorn and your whole mouth goes numb. Fantastic.

Wow-za
To start... I received my package exactly 24 hours after placing it on the regular non-rushed shipment format!!I opened the professionally sealed bag to a waft of spectacular, woodsy, smoky wonderfulness. The "peppercorns" are big and very fresh looking. The next day, having sealed the "peppercorns" in a ziplock bag, the smell in my kitchen is exquisite.I am very excited to cook with these. I will be buying more spices from this company soon.Product and delivery has more than exceeded expectation.

Peppercorns, Szechuan, Whole, 2 oz. Top to learn more

Very good roasted
These Szechuan ones are 99.9% just the husk (shell) and virtually none of the peppercorns. Roast them and crush them to get the flavor and texture right. If you don't roast them and crush them up they'll be chewy and lack the flavor you expect. I am used to seeing more of the peppercorns mixed in which I crush up with the husks as I roast them. Yummy.

Product Description

An essential ingredient in Chinese cooking, Szechuan peppercorns are once again allowed to be imported. Our Szechuan peppercorns are imported directly from the growing region in China. These tiny, reddish-brown peppercorns are noted for their strong, pungent flavor that distinguishes them from black peppercorns. They are used a great deal in Szechuan cooking which is noted for its spiciness. Noted Chinese cookbook author Irene Kuo wrote that only the seeded peppercorns should be purchased since the flavor and aroma only come from the petal-like husks. Ours are just that and are free of twigs and other residue. Szechuan peppercorns are often used as a seasoning for roasted meats and poultry. Top to learn more

Very fresh, but short weight.
This came packed in 4 plastic bags inside a "Bubble Envelope". The weight of the entire package - unopened and undamaged - was 14.2 ounces. Don't know about China, but in the USA that's well short of a pound. Not going to bother with trying to get my money back, but you need to be aware of this.

BUY Szechuan Peppercorns 8 oz.

Where Can I buy Szechuan Peppercorns

The package I picked up was labelled “prickly ash,” but the three other packages next to it were labelled “Chinese red pepper” and “wild chili” or something, but all seemed to be Szechuan peppercorns, so use caution and ask around. Either way, it seemed like a natural: dried preserved lemon peels mixed with toasted Szechuan peppercorns ground into a condiment. Step three: I put the toasted peppercorns and dried lemon peel into the bowl of a meticulously cleaned coffee grinder and let ‘er rip. Before we get to what I did, let’s get straight about Szechuan peppercorns “—which, he neglects to mention, is awesome. I toasted a tablespoon of the Szechuan peppercorns in a cast-iron pan over high heat until fragrant and just starting to change colour. The powder certainly does sound incredibly tasty and if you have a mind to squirrel a bit away, would love to try it. Got a good laugh out of you trying it straight up. I’ve been a victim of this so often you’d think I’d learn by now, but just... It smells sharply of lemon, but has that spicy undertone of the Szechuan pepper. I also thought of trying this, truth be told, because a while ago Michelle bought a crappy bottle of lemon pepper seasoning that I was snobby about at first, and have since used every time I make a tuna sandwich.

Most Americanized Chinese restaurants with "Szechuan" dishes aren't using Szechuan peppercorns, so you need to go to a more authentic place to get the real deal. Szechuan peppercorns are essential in this style of cooking. Oh yeah, and we're also going on a cruise in the Mediterranean for 2 weeks at the end of May (. ). Between packing the house, getting ready for the cruise, and showing the house, it's been crazy around these parts. Anyway, my inaugural spring post is my favorite Szechuan dish: MaPo Tofu. We have a great Szechuan restaurant near my work and I order it every time. A phone camera, even one with 8 mp, doesn't compare to a real one. Carefully fold in tofu, chili oil, and scallion greens, bring back to a simmer and cook for another minute or so until heated through. Don't make this dish without 'em. Some of the ingredients must be bought at an Asian market, but once you have them, this dish comes together in a jiffy.

Sichuan Pepper, also written Szechuan pepper or Szechwan pepper, named after the chinese province Szechuan (Sichuan), famous for it`s hot spicy cuisine, is the outer hull of the small fruit of several shrubs of the genus Zanthoxylum. Even if Szechuan pepper is called pepper, it`s not related to black pepper (Piper nigrum).
